St Bartholomew the Great Wedding

I loved this London winter wedding with its mix of glamour and sociability, both of which flowed from the bride and groom, Caroline and Joe.  It’s difficult to really know how to describe this wedding as a St Bartholomew the Great wedding or a St John’s restaurant wedding, or even factor in The Ned in some way, as they all left their particular mark on the shape and tone and images from the day.

First, The Ned

The Ned is just a beautifully opulent place for bridal prep.  The tall windows letting in that beautiful window light and texture wooden panelling and intricate fabrics exude an old world opulence.  Then of course there’s the restaurant downstairs marbling and lozenge patterned floors that just screams classic old black and white photography.

St Bartholomew the Great, with its stunning Norman architecture, provided a wonderfully atmospheric backdrop for the fourth wedding in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Remember Charles’ near-miss wedding to Henrietta? That iconic scene, full of last-minute revelations and the arrival of Carrie, unfolded within the ancient walls of this very church, adding a touch of timeless grandeur to the film’s romantic chaos. It’s a memorable moment that beautifully contrasts the traditional setting with the very modern dilemmas of the characters.

St John, Restaurant, Wedding Reception

St John’s has become the gourmand’s..

St John’s in Smithfield, the celebrated restaurant by Fergus Henderson known for its “nose-to-tail” eating philosophy, doesn’t primarily function as a traditional wedding venue, it absolutely offers its unique spaces for private events, including wedding receptions. Imagine a stylishly pared-down celebration in their iconic dining room, perhaps following a ceremony at a nearby church like the historic St Bartholomew the Great. The focus would undoubtedly be on a memorable feast of British cuisine and excellent wines, creating a distinctly non-traditional yet sophisticated wedding experience for those who appreciate culinary excellence in a relaxed setting.
