I photograph families in much the same way I photograph everything else: by paying attention to what is actually happening.

Children being funny, strange, affectionate, furious, bored or suddenly obsessed with a stick. Parents attempting to maintain some sort of order. The small gestures, private jokes and bits of family shorthand that would mean nothing to anyone else but mean everything to you.

We can photograph at home, where everyone already knows where the biscuits are, or go somewhere you genuinely spend time together. That might be a London street, a park, the beach in Hastings or St Leonards, or somewhere with no particular photographic credentials beyond being yours.

You don’t need to arrive with matching clothes, a collection of poses or children prepared to behave like unusually small lifestyle models. I’ll give you direction when it helps, then leave enough room for something real to happen.

There will be photographs in which everybody looks wonderful. There may also be photographs involving sulking, snacks, wind, mud, chaos and an inexplicable plastic object someone refuses to put down.

Usually, those are the photographs that become more valuable.
