Friday Photo: Reaction Shots
So I loved this wedding. I could probably feature a Friday Photo from every section of the day. It was glamorous, stylish, but most importantly, fun. I said last week in Gemma’s shot that the great thing about her was that she didn’t take herself or her stylings too seriously. And that was exactly true of Lewis, too, and it comes shining through in this image. He’s in a very sharp, tailor-made blue suit, and what’s he doing… he’s using it to accessorise a blue balloon as the large MC Motors shutters roll up to reveal him reclining six inches away from a puddle and right next to London Borough of Hackney dumpster. It says the fun and the humour are more important than the trappings. In terms of the photo, I’ve been asked if this was set up, and it wasn’t. I make a point of never setting up shots. If I did the moment would be about me and not the people in the photo. Everyone had a helium balloon tied to the back of the chairs during the wedding breakfast and they were coming out to release them into the pale Dalston skies. Gemma and Lewis had come out first, and I was adjusting my camera’s exposure when I turned round to see Lewis getting into position, so I just turned round and waited for the shutters to be at the right height — for the composition and for the faces. Because, although this shot is all about Lewis, you don’t need to see his face. If I’d gone round to get his face I would have lost the extra element — the surprise and delight of the wedding party. The reaction shot.
