London Party Photography – Bowie Night

This was a brilliantly warm, feel-good, 60th birthday party below the streets of Central London. The Starman, just off Regent St, is Bowie themed pub.

I always love doing party or event photography like this. The nights are relaxed, easy going and convivial with none of the pressure of weddings. Now obviously pressure can be a great thing and can push you to do some of your best work because your nerve endings are jangling and you’re alert and focused. But equally that can also just be a narrative you tell yourself to navigate a stressful situation with an elevated, positive outlook. Sometimes it’s nice just to wonder about in a small space with friendly people knowing you’re simply capturing them as they relax with friends and family.

This ‘Finnfest’ Bowie night for Finn’s 60th birthday party was exactly one of those nights. Everyone was chatty and engaging and I had a number of really interesting conversations as the night. went on. It was a TV crowd so they were relaxed around a camera, which also didn’t hurt.
