A Bermondsey wedding, a sequinned red dress and a day that felt more like a fun, easy-going get-together of family and friends, with a wedding thrown in for good measure.
Which is generally when things get interesting.
This small London wedding started at Islington Town Hall and then moved quickly and easily to Pedro’s Wine Bar, housed inside some beautiful old Bermondsey arches.
I didn’t set out to photograph it in any particular way, but I quickly realised this day was going to be very much its own thing. Not an orchestrated collection of moments, but a strange, funny and occasionally beautiful sequence of events unfolding naturally in a way that felt personal and real.
The approach was documentary, although the eye was probably more editorial. There was no brief or shot list dictating what the day was supposed to look like. And I have zero interest in attempting to turn a day into somebody else’s idea of wedding photography. I just want to capture the characters, the streets, the odd details and the brilliant mishmash of friends and family as they bump and collide.
These photographs are the story of the day as I found it: a wedding that felt entirely like the people having it. Red sequins, good company and cigarettes.
