Charlotte & Drew – A Winter Wedding at Town Hall Hotel
I loved the dynamics of this wedding. Drew was an ebullient American while Charlotte was gentle, quiet and wry, with two fizzy, raucous sisters who seemed to come out of a different pot.
Together, Charlotte and Drew were more playful, loving and amused than tactile and lovey-dovey. No less starry-eyed, though.
The other thing I couldn’t not love was Jonny, their kilted celebrant. A close friend of theirs, and the reason I was shooting this wedding in the first place. I’d photographed Jonny and Jo’s hugely characterful East London winter wedding a year before this one. Due to the low light, I ended up shooting pretty much the whole thing on flash, which gave it a pretty unique feel. It’s always lovely to find previous brides and grooms among the guests.
Lastly, a note about Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green. It isn’t the easiest place to photograph, but when the light is right it can be magical. The low winter light caught the guests as they congratulated Charlotte and Drew, then turned golden on our brief mid-afternoon walk around the block. For this wedding, it hit just right pretty much all day.
